On the 7th January 2019, the cycling community and the Royal Air Force lost a valued member when Flt Lt Barrie-John (BJ) Doherty was tragically killed whilst cycling home from work. BJ was a passionate cyclist, and although he enjoyed the sport in all its forms, he was best well known for his mountain biking prowess.
From trail building, to teaching his boys to ride, to twice racing the World Endurance Mountain Bike Organisation 24 hour World Championship, BJ was an exceptional cyclist and a true character of the sport. His friends, family, colleagues and the wider mountain bike community, have ensured his spirit lives on, both on and off the bike, using #bemoreBJ to document their achievements.
Away from his cycling exploits, BJ was a big supporter of Action Duchenne. This charity supports those diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, following the diagnosis of a friends young son. In 2018, he ran the Manchester Marathon to raise money for them.
BJ was a very early fan of Big Bobble Hats, having first come across us at a No Fuss Events duathlon. Big Bobble Hats even featured in his wedding photos.
Big Bobble Hats have partnered with the RAF Cycling Association and designed a bobble hat in RAF Cycling colours incorporating #bemoreBJ.
Proceeds from the sale of the #bemoreBJ Big Bobble Hat will go to supporting the work of Action Duchenne.
